The Echo Show is one of the best smart speakers you can buy—with or without a display—but today’s deal makes it one of the best values too. Amazon has cut the price of its second-generation Echo Show to just $180Remove non-product link, matching an all time low. But what makes this deal even sweeter is the inclusion of a free Philips Hue smart bulb with every purchase.
The Echo Show’s built-in display can help you see everything from the weather to song lyrics, with Alexa helping you control it with just the sound of your voice. You can also stream video and make video calls and see feeds from your Ring doorbell without lifting a finger. And of course, you can also control smart devices such as the bundled Hue bulb (though you’ll need a separate hubRemove non-product link if you aren’t already set up with Hue lighting in your house).
We gave gave the Echo Show 4.5 stars out of 5 in our review, noting its clear, vibrant display and easy-to-use interface as reasons to buy. And we love the Hue lightbulbs too, so this deal is just too good to pass by.

If you want to get your game on, but don’t want to build your own rig, Walmart’s got you covered today. The rollback giant is selling a Ryzen-based 1080p gaming PC rocking a Ryzen 7 processor and a Radeon RX 590 for $1,050Remove non-product link. Newegg, meanwhile, has a 24-inch 1080p monitor with FreeSync for $110Remove non-product link.
The CyberPower PC Gamer Supreme features an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processor, an 8GB Radeon RX 590 graphics card, 16GB of RAM, a 240GB SSD, and a 2TB hard drive. The Ryzen 7 2700X is a great 8-core processor featuring a liquid cooler, and a 3.7GHz clock speed—we really liked it when we reviewed it last year.
But the real star of the show is the RX 590, which we recently crowned as the 1080p gaming champion. You can just crank all the settings up to the max at 1080p on most games for a great experience, and you can get a pretty respectable showing at 1440p too. At $1,050 this is a pretty good price considering we recently covered a similar CyberPower gaming PC with the Ryzen 7 2700 and an Nvidia RX 2070 for $1,200. That’s $150 more than this deal, and you’re still getting a great graphics card with a better processor.
If you do get this desktop PC, you can also grab the Acer GF246 for $110 at Newegg. This is a 24-inch 1080p AMD FreeSync monitor featuring a 75Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time. Newegg is selling it for $120, but you can save an extra $10 using the checkout code EMCTVTA53.

In 1962, Tony “Tony Lip” Vallelonga, a tough bouncer, is looking for work with his nightclub is closed for renovations. The most promising offer turns out to be the driver for the African-American classical pianist Don Shirley for a concert tour into the Deep South states. Although hardly enthused at working for a black man, Tony accepts the job and they begin their trek armed with The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide for safe travel through America’s racial segregation. Together, the snobbishly erudite pianist and the crudely practical bouncer can barely get along with their clashing attitudes to life and ideals. However, as the disparate pair witness and endure America’s appalling injustices on the road, they find a newfound respect for each other’s talents and heart to face them together. In doing so, they would nurture a friendship and understanding that would change both their lives. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)
The Italian-language scenes in the script simply read, “They speak Italian.” Viggo Mortensen queried Peter Farrelly about it, and Farrelly encouraged him to construct the Italian dialogue himself. Drawing on Viggo’s own experiences from overhearing Italian in Buenos Aires, the result is a combination of Calabrian and the “cobbled together” Italian that forms in diaspora communities where people of different regions converge. He also made an effort to make the language old-fashioned, as the slang and vocabulary the family spoke would have dated from the time of the Vallelonga and Venere fathers’ immigration. Viggo experienced this himself after spending his childhood in Argentina and returning as an adult to find all his slang was out of date. See more »

The 5G revolution is coming at some point, but AT&T wants Android and iPhone users to think it’s already here—even though it’s not. In short, if you see a new “5GE” icon in your status bar, you aren’t magically getting an upgrade to 5G. But there’s more to it than that. Here’s what you need to know.
What is 5G?
5G is the next step in wireless communication, offering theoretical speeds that absolutely blow away LTE. Even at the outset, customers will see wireless speeds that match what they get over Wi-Fi—up to 1Gbps in some cases. That’s far greater than the 20-30Mbps capable over LTE.
When is 5G arriving?
Actual 5G won’t arrive for a while, at least not in a nationwide capacity. Some 5G networks are technically live already, but they’re limited to home-based broadband and hotspots in certain areas of the U.S. So while the first true 5G phones should be arriving later this year, there won’t be anything close to nationwide coverage until at least 2020.
So then what’s 5GE?
AT&T’s 5GE network is merely a slightly faster LTE network. You’re still connecting to the same network as before, but through a combination of 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM, some phones might see faster speeds in some areas. It’s basically marketing lingo.
What does the “E” stand for?
Evolution.
So how did I get it on my phone?
Simple answer: You updated. Whether it was iOS 12.2 on your iPhone or Android Pie on your Galaxy phone, your handset received the ability to display a new icon in your status bar: 5GE.
What phones are capable of receiving 5GE?
The iPhone XS and XS Max, as well any Android phone that uses 4×4 MIMO, are technically capable of receiving the upgraded 5GE signal.
I upgraded to iOS 12.2. Why am I not seeing it on my phone?
Either you’re not an AT&T subscriber or you’re not in an area where 5GE is active.
I have an iPhone XR. Will I ever get 5GE?
The iPhone XR uses 2×2 MIMO so it won’t be able to take advantage of the faster speeds.
If I can get 5GE does that mean my phone will be able to receive 5G once it’s available?
Nope, you’ll need to buy a new phone. But first someone will need to make one. There aren’t any iPhones or Android phones capable of receiving 5G signals, though a few are expected later this year. iPhone users will likely need to wait until at least 2020 to purchase a 5G-ready iPhone.

Miles, strangely, blames himself for ‘being followed’ to Aunt May’s house, when by then it was public knowledge that May’s nephew was Spider-Man. (The memorials placed in front of her house are evidence of this ubiquity; although, as another plot hole, the obviousness of the backyard shed being a brightly glowing, emblem-showing Spider-Cave entry door would have tipped off the neighbors long before Spider-Man’s passing, that May knows Spider-Man). Either way, it makes perfect sense to assume the villains would go to May’s to find the Spider-Men they were pursuing. See more »

It’s 2019, and we’re still waiting for a proper Wear OS watch that can take on the Apple Watch. Not since the original Huawei Watch has there been an Android wearable truly worth getting excited about. If anything, they seem to be getting worse. The latest Wear OS watches are thicker, clunkier, and slower they they’ve ever been, and most of them still barely last a day.
So maybe it’s time for a change. A big change. Instead of trying to chase Apple and offer an inferior version of its watch, Google should rethink not just Wear OS, but the whole idea of a smartwatch. In the latest episode of Android Confidential I propose three radical ideas for not just fixing Wear OS, but turning it into something completely new:
Dump the apps
That’s right, I want Google to abandon the Play Store completely in Wear OS. I’ll admit it was cool back in 2017, when I could browse apps on my wrist while my Apple Watch-using friends had to use their phones to install Uber and Twitter. But it’s been two years, and apps aren’t any better on our wrist. There may be a few that are worth downloading, but for the most part, the functionality they provide could just as easily be incorporated into a watch face.
Magdalena Petrova
Apps just aren’t great on Wear OS.
That goes for Google’s apps, too. Instead of apps that I need to download, install, and scroll through, I’d rather see better complications and a tighter integration with my phone. My watch should be something that anticipates what I need. When I ask for directions or request an Uber on my phone, my watch should respond rather than make my tap away at a tiny screen to get things done.
Offer a Watch Mode
Battery life is the biggest issue with smartwatches, with most lasting the better part of a day. Google already offers a battery saver that ekes out a couple more hours of life by turning off things like notifications and haptics, but I’d rather Google implemented a Watch Mode that lasted a week, let me turn it on with a toggle, and focused on the features that matter. There are times when I just want my smartwatch to tell time, get notifications, and count steps. I don’t need every battery-sucking sensor, feature, and app turned on to do it. I don’t even want the ability to respond to texts. We’ve seen various modes on Wear OS watches that extend battery life, but I’d like to see a Watch Mode built into Wear OS, so any model I choose can last more than a day.
Let Assistant take over
With the switch from Android Wear to Wear OS, Google added an Assistant feed screen to the left of the watch face that keeps you up-to-date on weather, appointments, alarms, and the like. It’s a neat feature, but it’s unnecessarily hidden. Why should I have to swipe or otherwise activate Assistant on my watch? I want Assistant on my watch to be like Assistant on my Home Hub: always ready, always thinking. When I’m in a dark room or a movie, turn off raise to wake. When I’m sleeping, don’t buzz my wrist for anything other than an alarm. When I’m working out, automatically record it, no matter what I’m doing. And if I clear a notification on my phone, delete it from my watch. Talking to Google Assistant is one thing, but I’d rather Assistant did the heavy lifting behind the scenes without my having to think about it.
Google
Assistant has a starring role on the new redesigned Wear OS, but I’d like it to do more.
Google doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel, but it does need to rethink how it rolls. Wear OS has been stagnant for far too long. It needs more than simple UI tweaks to bolster the experience, and I think it’s time to shake things up.

Queen Atlanna:

Sonos is taking pre-orders on its first architectural speakers, designed in conjunction with Sonance. The new product line—dubbed Sonos Architectural by Sonance—will initially consist of passive in-wall, in-ceiling, and surface-mount outdoor loudspeakers designed specifically to be powered by the new Sonos Amp, which the company announced last fall.
The first two speakers, Sonos In-Wall by Sonance and Sonos In-Ceiling by Sonance, are available for pre-order at Sonos.com today for $599 per pair, with general availability slated for February 26. Both are designed so that their paintable grilles will be flush with the surface when installed.
Sonos Outdoor by Sonance will cost $799 per pair, with general availability in April. The outdoor speakers mount to the wall using brackets and are engineered to withstand the elements: humidity, water, salt spray, heat, ultraviolet rays, and freezing temperatures.
Sonos
The in-wall speakers have white grills, but you can paint them to match your walls.
All three speakers are 8-ohm, two-way models, equipped with 1-inch pivoting polyurethane dome ferrofluid-cooled tweeters and 6.5-inch pivoting injection-molded polypropylene woofers. Sonos claims frequency response of 44Hz to 20kHz, +/- 3dB for the indoor models, and 55Hz to 20kHz, +/- 3dB for the outdoor speaker. The sensitivity ratings for all three are 89dB SPL (2.83V at 1 meter).
The power-handling characteristics of the line reflects that they were designed to be paired with the Sonos Amp: 5 watts minimum, 130 watts maximum (the Sonos Amp is rated to deliver maximum power of 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms). The Sonos Amp is equipped with custom banana plugs that can handle 10- to 18AWG speaker wire, so we presume that’s also what the speakers can accommodate. Sonos says each Amp is capable of driving up to three pairs of Sonos Architectural by Sonance speakers.
You’ll need an 8-1/4-inch cutout and 4-3/4 inches of depth to install the circular in-ceiling speakers (the white, paintable grilles are 9-3/4 inches in diameter). The rectangular in-wall speakers will need 6-15/16 x 10-3/4-inch cutouts and 3-1/2 inches of depth. Their white, paintable grilles measure 8-3/8 by 12-1/4 inches. Buyers will be able to tune the indoor speakers to the rooms they’re in, using Sonos TruePlay and an Apple mobile device.
Sonos
The in-ceiling speakers have a coaxial design, with a 6.5-inch woofer surrounding a 1-inch tweeter.
The outdoor speakers are designed to be surface mounted and measure 6.86 inches deep, 12.14 inches high, and 7.51 inches wide (although the provided art indicates they can be mounted in either portrait or landscape mode). Sonos says outdoor environments are too variable to be conducive to TruePlay room tuning.
Sonance is well known for building high-end architectural speakers and subwoofers that are marketed to custom installers. Their products are designed to disappear into walls and ceilings so that they’re heard, but not seen. The Sonos Architectural by Sonance line will also be marketed to custom installers, but do-it-yourselfers will be able to buy these speakers directly from Sonos and at select retailers.
