Trivia

When Miles first visits Uncle Aaron’s apartment, the television is playing the television show Community (2009) (Season 2, Episode 1 “Anthropology 101”). The beginning of that episode shows Donald Glover’s character Troy getting out of bed wearing Spider-Man pajamas. This was a reference to an unsuccessful 2010 online campaign to get Donald Glover a chance to audition for the lead role in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). Miles Morales co-creator Brian Michael Bendis describes that image of Glover in the Spider-Man pajamas as one of the major inspirations for the creation of the character and the character’s design. Additionally, Glover appeared as another version of Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), in which he makes brief reference to his nephew. Glover also voiced Miles Morales in Disney’s “Ultimate Spider-Man” cartoon series. See more »

Quotes

Peter Parker:
[narrating]
Alright, let’s do this one last time. My name is Peter Parker. I was bitten by a radioactive spider and for ten years I’ve been the one and only Spider-Man. I’m pretty sure you know the rest. I saved a bunch of people, fell in love, saved the city, and then I saved the city again and again and again… And, uh… I did this.

[shot of Spidey doing the emo dance from “Spider-Man 3”]

Peter Parker:
We don’t really talk about this. Look, I’m a comic book, I’m a cereal, did a Christmas album…

Trivia

Amber Heard declared in an interview on Good Morning America (1975) that she would read books between takes and that Jason Momoa would purposely rip out their pages so she would pay attention to him. Eventually, her reading material was kept in a special book bag made of “green screen” fabric, which allowed her to keep her books close even when filming special effects shots. See more »

Abode’s new Gen 2 gateway comes with 4G cellular and Z-Wave Plus

Abode Systems has announced a second generation of its security-focused smart home gateway. Dubbed Abode Gen 2, the new device offers integrated 4G cellular connectivity (as a backup in case your broadband connection goes down) and a Z-Wave 500 chip (the first-gen hub used a Z-Wave 300 chip).

The upgrade to the Z-Wave 500 chip is the biggest benefit to be had here, because it renders the gateway Z-Wave Plus certified and it adds the more robust Z-Wave Security S2 command class to the hub. Z-Wave 500 chips are considerably faster and more powerful than the previous generation, which should enable the Abode Gen 2 gateway to support more smart home devices.

Z-Wave Security S2 plugs a known security hole in older Z-Wave devices that requires considerable skill and sophisticated equipment for a hacker—who must be on site at the moment a new Z-Wave device is being enrolled—to exploit. Despite the low probability of this ever happening in the real world, the vulnerability needed to be addressed and it has been.

The Gen 2 gateway will now be included with all three Abode starter kits, each of which consists of the gateway itself, one motion sensor, one door/window sensor, and a key fob for arming and disarming the system. The Abode Secure bundle costs $359 and includes one year of professional monitoring and 4G service, the Connect bundle costs $299 and includes one year of 4G, and the Basic bundle is priced at $279, but doesn’t include either service.

Existing Abode customers will be able to purchase the Gen 2 gateway as an upgrade for $199, plus $10 per month ($96 per year) if they opt for 4G service (the Connect plan), or $30 per month ($240 per year) for both professional monitoring and 4G service (the Secure plan). The paid service plans also include telephone and email tech support.

Hubitat Elevation review: This smart home hub keeps everything local, a noble but ultimately impractical goal

The Hubitat Elevation smart hub was born with noble intentions and the promise of total privacy, because it doesn’t rely on any cloud-based service. As the company asks, why put the security and convenience of your smart home in the hands of an unreliable internet—or a company that could shut down its service at any moment?

In stark contrast to the rest of the industry, Hubitat says its smart home solution is “100 percent local.” While you need to create an online account with the company to use it, once you do that, all your devices connect directly to the Hubitat, all processing is done locally on your home network, and all management takes place via a web-based interface served from the Hubitat Elevation directly, not from an online service.

If you’re concerned about hackers taking control of your smart home from afar, Hubitat has a security selling point in that all your information is stored locally, too. While your data is only as secure as your login credentials, at least it’s not at risk of a widescale hack against a cloud-based service.

Hubitat is the ultimate in tinfoil-hat-friendly, DIY home automation.

hubitat elevation google home Christopher Null

The Hubitat hardware is a small device that connects to your router via ethernet.

It’s an interesting concept, but does any of this really matter? Does Hubitat’s localized technology offer any other real benefits aside from better up time? Today’s major hubs and voice assistants have varying degrees of capabilities when the internet is down. SmartThings, for example, has a hybrid design that allows for some automations to complete (but not manual, on-demand control), while Alexa and Google Assistant are totally powerless when their host devices can’t access the internet.

With Hubitat, internet outages are largely irrelevant. Aside from the initial login (for which you can use a social media account), the only thing Hubitat uses your router for is to obtain a local IP address. Again, neither it nor your PC need to broadband access for the duo to communicate—or to control local smart home devices.

Hubitat works with a sizable number of products, primarily anything in the Z-Wave and ZigBee universes. It also has hooks for Lutron (including that company’s RadioRA 2, Serena, and Sivoia platforms) and a few other devices. (The first version of Elevation, released in mid-2018, required a USB stick to connect to wireless gear; the new version is smaller and integrates those radios directly.)

hubitat user interface3 Christopher Null

To do anything within Hubitat, you must first add an app for the device or service you wish to use it with, which you’ll select from this massive list.

In addition to that, Hubitat can connect to other devices that do rely on the web, including Nest, Alexa, Rachio, and Life360. Hubitat supports the IFTTT service, too. Again, while the Hubitat doesn’t rely on an internet connection to control local devices, you will need a live internet connection if, say, you want to tell Alexa to turn off a Hubitat-controlled light. Once you open that hole for the sake of convenience, you pretty much undo the security blanket that is Hubitat’s primary attraction.

So that’s Hubitat in theory, and it’s an important base level of understanding to have if you think the Hubitat platform might be for you. Because the big hurdle comes next: Once you plug the device into your router and start configuring it, you are entering a world of hackery that the smart home industry has, for the most part, desperately sought to avoid.

hubitat user interface 2 Christopher Null

The Hubitat will look for Z-Wave and ZigBee devices in your environment, but you’ll need to have some familiarity with how to enroll those types of devices to a controller.

Hubitat is configured via a web browser, as opposed to an app running on your smartphone or tablet (as a matter of fact, there is no app). You connect directly to the Hubitat box, bypassing the internet, and perform initial setup and ongoing configuration/interaction there. The thing is, the Hubitat web interface is hardly a user-friendly place to visit. If you’ve ever spent time configuring your router via its web interface, you have some idea of what you’re getting into (this ~14-minute unboxing video gives you a better sense of it; skip ahead to about the 9-minute mark to see the interface in action).

Minimal documentation is included in the box, so if you really want to get anything done you’ll need to delve into the dozens of pages of online documentation and, more probably, Hubitat’s message boards, where an active community seems game to troubleshoot the most arcane of technical problems.

The good news is that if you’re patient, the Hubitat system works. I was able to add devices to the Hubitat system (all of which must be purchased separately), control them within the Hubitat dashboard, and configure rules to have them work together. I even got Alexa working with the system, so I could use voice commands to turn off switches connected to the device. Again, there’s no mobile app for Hubitat; to access your dashboard via phone you must visit a mobile version of its dashboard webpage.

hubitat elevation box shot Hubitat

The latest version of Hubitat Elevation eliminates the need for a USB dongle to control Z-Wave and ZigBee devices. Those radios are now onboard the hub itself.

The bad news is that none of this is intuitive—at all. To use the Hubitat dashboard, for example, you need to install the app that creates dashboards, and then configure the dashboard by stumbling through a series of esoteric parameters. Want to set up rules? You’ll need to install the Rule Machine app, and then configure each rule piece by piece. Don’t see what you need in the list of provided apps? Why, you can write your own code from scratch for either a new app or, gulp, a device driver.

Hubitat is provided to you as a completely blank slate, and while the freedom that provides might resonate with hardcore smart home enthusiasts with the patience to tinker, it will be far too confusing for most people. Hubitat’s ecosystem is so raw that it makes even tech-heavy hubs like the SkylinkNet Alarm System look breezy in comparison.

It’s also worth noting that the web interface wasn’t rock solid in my testing; pages sometimes didn’t load, or they loaded very slowly. Setting up devices within Hubitat often involved a lot of waiting around for options to save and pages to refresh. This is not a system for beginners—or the impatient.

The final analysis in all of this is that while Hubitat does offer a powerful system with a unique angle, the lack of basic usability features will render it a nonstarter for many. After all, there’s a reason so many smart home solutions rely on the cloud.

Hands on: The Kensington SD7000 dock turns a Surface tablet into a Surface Studio

For years, Microsoft Surface fans have wondered two things: First, would Microsoft ever sell a standalone version of its massive Surface Studio display? And second, when would the company update its Surface Dock? The Kensington SD7000 Surface Pro Docking Station answers both questions…sort of.

Put simply, Kensington’s SD700 features the “zero-gravity hinge” construction of the Surface Studio, but instead of a massive 25-inch, 4.5K screen, there’s a partial frame which can hold a Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro (2017), or Surface Pro 6. We’d call the SD7000 a sort-of hybrid between a tablet stand and a dock, which can also serve as an inking surface should you need that.

Kensington SD7000 Surface docking station Mark Hachman / IDG

The Kensington SD7000 docking station.

In some ways, the Kensington SD7000 reminds me of the first generation of Surface Pro docks, which “grabbed” each side of the tablet and featured a port extender at the Surface Connector slot. To use the SD7000, you slide the Surface Pro tablet into the SD7000’s frame, then hold the device in place by snapping a side handle closed. Naturally, you’ll immediately discover one limitation: You have to remove the Type Cover.

Kensington SD7000 Surface docking station Mark Hachman / IDG

This is about as high as the SD7000’s arms can raise the tablet…

Meanwhile, on the rear of the SD7000’s base, there’s an array of ports: four USB 3.0 ports, an ethernet jack, a full-sized DisplayPort++ 1.2 port, HDMI, a Kensington lock (naturally), and a headphone jack. Finally, there’s also a USB-C port, though it’s data only. (USB-C is a feature of the Surface Studio 2, though not the the Surface tablets.)

Kensington SD7000 Surface docking station Mark Hachman / IDG

…and here the SD7000 is in “easel mode.” It doesn’t recline as far as the Surface Pro 6 kickstand allows, but it provides a sturdier surface.

In all, it’s a solid idea, executed solidly—until you factor price into the equation. The Kensington SD7000 docking station costs $399.99—which sounds exorbitant, and it is. The one saving grace is that Microsoft already charges, $199 for the Surface Dock though prices are lower elsewhere.

Using the Kensington SD7000: Sturdy and useful

Though the Surface Pro is a mobile device, the SD7000 decidedly isn’t: At 7.28 pounds, the SD7000 is weighted to hold the Surface Pro firmly. Though the SD7000’s construction is plastic, a large metal hinge and arms smoothly moves the tablet receptacle flat upwards through 65 degrees or so. A secondary hinge also rotates the receptacle itself by about 90 degrees.

Kensington SD7000 Surface docking station Mark Hachman / IDG

Kensington’s SD7000 is what we’d call “dashboard mode.” This is something that the tablet by itself can’t do.

Both hinges allow you to adjust the tablet through a wide range of positions. At its highest point, the tablet can’t get quite vertical, though the slight angle is actually more ergonomic. At its lowest point, the tablet reclines to about 30 degrees. Unfortunately, the hinge isn’t quite strong enough to support the full weight of the tablet if you lower it close to the desktop, so it sags until the tablet’s weight is supported by the flat surface. On the other hand, the SD7000’s construction also allows you to place the dock on a desk, then drop it down to where it’s hanging off the edge, onto a keyboard drawer.

Kensington SD7000 Surface docking station Mark Hachman / IDG

A retaining handle snaps in and out, connecting power and I/O to the Surface tablet and holding it in place.

The SD7000’s inability to support the tablet’s weight is annoying if you’re planning on using it as a monitor; as an inking surface, the sag is perfectly acceptable. Keep in mind that the built-in kickstand of the Surface lineup allows you to recline the tablet further than the SD7000, though with a bit of unwanted springiness that isn’t present in the SD7000. The frame goes just partway up the Surface tablet, providing plenty of area for the tablet to cool itself under load.

Unfortunately, as a dock, the SD7000 is hampered by the limitations of the Surface Connector—though the dock can support more than one physical display, only a single 4K display can be run at 60Hz. If two are connected, the display bandwidth must be split into two 4K connections at a sub-standard 30Hz—a limitation of the Surface, however, and not the SD7000.

Kensington SD7000 Surface docking station Mark Hachman / IDG

A closer look at the hinges that allow the SD7000 to raise, lower, and swivel the Surface tablet.

Unfortunately, Kensington followed Microsoft’s cue with the Surface Studio and placed the  SD7000’s ports on the rear. It might be a strong choice aesthetically, but functionally it isn’t: You’ll be rotating the entire contraption around to insert any new cable or device. But the SD7000 also receives power through its power cord, which it passes along to the tablet. The sleeve construction also keeps accessible the USB Type A and miniDP ports already on the Surface Pro. (If you already own a Surface Pro tablet, chances are you already own a miniDP-to-HDMI cable anyway, making the full-sized DisplayPort and HDMI connectors on the SD7000 somewhat irrelevant.)

Kensington SD7000 Surface docking station Mark Hachman / IDG

The ports on the rear of the Kesington SD7000. Don’t forget the Kensington lock to the far right!

Kensington’s SD7000 plays into the odd little ecosystem of devices that can control more than one PC at a time, enabled by apps like Microsoft’s own Mouse without Borders app, as well as the Logitech MX Master 2S and its Logitech Flow technology. It’s up to you whether you’ll want to use the Surface Pro tablet as your primary device, or just use the SD7000 to put it in a convenient position as a a secondary display.

Either way, convenience is a pricey proposition for the SD7000. But without Microsoft stepping in to provide its own docking alternative, who can blame Kensington for cashing in?
